Footloose and Cancer-Free!

Today is October 1st, which means it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m happy to say that I’ve been breast cancer free for three months now! I was diagnosed with very early stage breast cancer in April of this year, had a double mastectomy in June, and will be having my exchange surgery next week to get my “permanent” implants. I put permanent in quotation marks because, in reality, they’ll actually need to be switched out for new ones about every 10 years or so.

Regardless of your gender identity, if you have any breast tissue, please get a regular mammogram! Most medical professionals agree that screening should start at age 40, but if something feels off before then, please always get it checked out. I had no lump, no symptoms of anything. My cancer was only caught because of a routine mammogram. I’m only 44 years old.

I’ll tell my cancer story some other time, but suffice to say, it’s been a wild ride. In the meantime, go get your damn mammogram!
