It’s Halloween! Let’s play a little game called Trick or Treat: Disability Edition. Basically, I’ll list out a bunch of surprise “tricks” that disabled people too often face, followed by unexpected “treats” that can manifest when we least expect them. Please feel free to comment with your own!
Trick: A public bathroom labeled “accessible” that turns out to be up a flight of stairs.
Treat: Finding a real accessible bathroom with grab bars in exactly the right place.
Trick: The stranger who pats you on the head and calls you “inspirational.”
Treat: The little kid who asks “Are you a robot?” with genuine curiosity.
Trick: The elevator that smells like everyone’s leftover lunch.
Treat: The elevator that opens right as you roll up.
Trick: Medical receptionists who act like they know your body better than you.
Treat: The nurse who actually listens when you say what works for you.
Trick: The Halloween party where all the seating is bar stools.
Treat: The one person who gives you the comfiest chair without making a big deal.
Trick: The endless forms that ask you to check a box but don’t fit your reality.
Treat: Communities where you don’t need to explain yourself at all.
